Welcome to the sixth part of our distance lesson "Let's do shopping!"

In this part of the lesson we are going

- to read texts about shopping in London;
- to take a virtual tour along the biggest shopping streets in London;
- to answer questions on the text

Have you ever visited London, the capital of the UK?
Today I offer you to walk around London and to visit the busiest shopping streets in London.

Do you know that?

London has over 40,000 shops and 26 major street markets to choose from.

Most of the food stores, called supermarkets, operate on the self-service system: you go in, pick up a basket, walk round the shop and choose what you want. At the exit there is a check-out point; a cash desk where you pay for all your goods together.

The best known street for shopping in London is Oxford Street. It is the most famous street in London where you can buy souvenirs, clothes, and so on. It is Europe's busiest shopping street with 548 shops in it. No matter which day you choose to come here your shopping will be hampered (затруднять) by mass of shoppers (покупатель).

Oxford Street is one and a half miles end to end. Most shops open 10am until 6 or 7pm. Some open Sunday 12 to 6pm with late nights on Thursday. This street is best known for Selfridges, the second largest department store in the UK.

The second shopping street of London is Regent`s Street.

Regent`s Street is well known to tourists and Londoners alike, and famous for its Christmas illuminations. The main reason for us mentioning this street is, the Hamley`s store.

Hamley`s is every child`s dream come true. Packed with all kinds of toys this shop will make a hole in the pocket of parents from demands of children .

Regent`s Street is named after the Prince Regent (later George IV), and is commonly associated with the architect John Nash. The street was completed in 1825 and was an early example of town planning in England.

Covent Garden is a district in London, mainly associated with the former (бывший) fruit and vegetable market located in the central square which is now a popular shopping and tourist site. Covent Garden restaurants, pubs, shops, opera, theatre and street performers make it the entertainment centre of London. The Royal Opera House, which is also known as "Covent Garden", the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, the London Transport Museum, St Paul's are situated there. Any time of the day or night there is always something going on.

Just off Oxford Street, less known and less crowded, but more expensive are New Bond Street and Old Bond Street. These streets have designer shops ready to dazzle (ослеплять) you. Most stores have a doorman who is there to open the doors for you, smile at you and wish you a nice day. The main difference with these two streets compared with the Oxford Street is the friendliness of staff working there and the price of the things they will try to sell you. So if you are looking to buy designer clothes, expensive furniture, paintings is the right place for you to be in.

Charing Cross Road is where book worms go. Mainstream (основной поток) bookshops, such as Foyles, Borders and Blackwells, line the street but perhaps the most unique feature about this road are its rare, second-hand and specialist shops. Foyles (bookshop) is famous for five floors containing thousands of titles. Foyles was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest bookshop in terms of shelf area (30 miles/50 kilometres) and number of titles on display.

Harrods opened in 1849 and has a reputation for excellence and the finest-quality merchandise. Harrods is a London landmark everyone wants to visit. Harrods has over 300 departments on seven floors so it's easy to spend a lot of time,and money, here. Don't miss the impressive food halls selling everything from fresh doughnuts and sushi to delicacies which make the perfect gift.

Notting Hill is famous worldwide thanks to the film of the same name. This street offers a vast array (ряд) of small, unique shops selling unusual and vintage (старинный) clothing, rare antiques, quirky(причудливый, необычный) gifts, books and organic food. There's also the unmissable (который невозможно пропустить) Portobello Road Market – a mile-long (1.6 km) street with a variety of different stalls set out daily.
