2.Thanking someone

You can use these phrases for mail messages, speeches or when receiving a compliment.

Thanks (inform.) - спасибо
Thank you - благодарю, спасибо
Thanks a lot (inform.)- большое спасибо
Thanks so much - большое спасибо? я очень благодарен вам
Thank you very much - большое спасибо
Many thanks - большое спасибо
Thankee (inform.)- спасибо (разг)
It was very kind of you – вы (были) так добры
I appreciate your help – я ценю вашу помощь
I truly appreciate this.- я действительно ценю это
You’ve been very helpful – вы очень любезны, вы мне очень помогли

3.Thanking someone who tries to help (but who does not succeed)

Thanks anyway

4. Responding to thanks

If a reply is necessary, we can say:

You’re welcome.
Not at all. (formal)
Don’t mention it.
(It’s) my pleasure.
It was nothing.
That’s (quite) all right
Thant’s OK (informal)
No problem.
Any time.
It was no trouble at all.
It was no bother. It was a pleasure.
It was a real pleasure for me to do it.
My pleasure.

Remember that “PLEASE” is not acceptable response to thanks.

Thank you is more formal than thanks.

- Thank you. (NOT Thanks you.)
- Thanks a lot. (NOT Thank you a lot.)
- Thank you very much.
- Thanks very much.
- Thank God ...(NOT Thanks God …)
- Thank you very much indeed. (BUT NOT Thank you indeed.)

Thanks / Thank you + Ving

Thank you for/ thanks for can be followed by an –ing form.

- Thank you for coming.
- Thanks for everything.
- I am really grateful for having


When can we use THANK YOU?

1. We often use Thank you/Thanks to accept offers.

- Would you like some coffee?
- Thank you.

2. To refuse an offer, you can say "No, thank you/ No thanks".

- Another cake?
- No, thanks. I have eaten too many already.
